A lot to do tomorrow

If you are like me these days and can't get over SNUGGIES and just need to get out tomorrow night well have no worries, there is plenty to do. First, ROTARY DOWNS is having a premiere for their 3rd video off their latest album at ONE EYED JACKS. You can view a preview of it by going to their BLOG.

But, if you are feeling in a more giving mood; head over to TIPITINA's to Catch MyNameIsJohnMichaels, CADDYWHOMPUS and a few others I haven't heard of as they try and raise money for Tipitina's Internship program. Here is some info on the program too!

T.I.P., the Tipitina's Internship Program, offers a small number of internships to New Orleans-basedhigh school musicians. This unique entity leverages Tipitina's Music Incubator, a group of resources allowing students to be immersed in a music internship by fostering mentoring relationships, offering engaging extracurricular activities, participating in workshops with musicians, producers, and scholars, and providing access to resources and facilities that would otherwise not be available to these students. The program targets students from high schools in the Greater New Orleans area. Students are recruited through recommendations by band directors, school principals, and parents; they enter the program through an application and audition process. Program participants are ethnically and socio-economically diverse; this diversity is one of the program's many strengths.T.I.P. meets after school on Mondays and Tuesdays. Students spend time developing instrumental skills, learning recording technologies and production techniques, participating in workshops with musicians, producers, and scholars, as well as receiving general academic tutoring.

Charlie Cooper of Telefon Tel Aviv Passes Away

It saddens me to bring this news to anyone especially one week after TELEFON TEL AVIV's latest album came out. This is from their BLOG on MySpace:

Hello, Everyone.

It breaks my heart to inform you all that Charlie Cooper, my better half in Telefon Tel Aviv, passed away on January 22nd.

We have been friends since high school, and began making records together a decade ago. We have been so fortunate to tour the world together, while at the same time having a massive amount of laughs at one another's expense.

Aside from Charlie's singular genius and musical gifts, I can tell you that he was a total sweetheart of a guy, and a loving friend and confidant to people everywhere. His musicianship was surpassed only by his greater gift to the world - his warmth, his generosity, his unquenchable humor, and his undying loyalty to those whom he loved. In the spirit of honorable mention, however, I should mention that he had a shoe collection that was marvelous, knowledge of hip-hop that was profound, and knowledge of wine that was subtle.

He is survived by a sister, a neice, a nephew, his mother, his stepfather, me, and more adoring friends than the Universe has dark matter. As such, his family and I ask for your discretion and consideration of our privacy during these extremely turbulent waters.

Yours in Music,

Joshua Eustis

We have lost way too many musicians in the past year. They were possibly the greatest electronic acts to ever come out of New Orleans and on a personal note Fahrenheit Fair Enough would easily go on one of my top 50 albums of the decade. Their music is an inspiration and one of my most fondest live shows in college was seeing them at the State Palace Theater in the Jungle Room. I would love to hear your memories of this iconic New Orleans act.

Get to know Titus Andronicus

There are times when I have felt that the opening band is better than the main act (ie the time ARCADE FIRE opened up for the UNICORNS) and I think that very well may be happening tonight at ONE EYED JACKS. Tonight, TITUS ANDRONICUS will be opening up for the British dance-pop act LOS CAMPESINOS and you may actually want to show up early for this one. Granted, I am a lot more into the sound of Titus Andronicus at this point in my life, but also lyrically they sit better with me. "It's You, It's Me, We're Dancing" vs "Your Life Is Over" (repeat about 100 times). I feel more like breaking stuff than dancing away the terror (My CAPITOL YEARS quote of the day) in these times we're living in. Ok, I promise this wont turn into a political blog anytime soon. Click HERE to get an MP3 from Titus Andronicus and HERE for a video from Los Campesinos. Also, I would love to hear of a another time when you thought the opening act was better than the headliner.

PS. I would appreciate it if when two bands tour that at least one of them has a name I don't have to always triple check the spelling on.

We in re-runs, y'all

For the astute fan who realized we didn't have a new episode last night we are officially on a winter break until I can get a new lap top so I can edit while up here in New York. Feel free to donate to this cause by emailing me ATTN: Lap Top to info@statictelevision.com and how much you would like to donate and I will let you know where you can send the money. Free CDs for anyone who donates $10 or greater and $50 or greater I will make a commercial about how awesome you are on the show.

Don't think we will stop working though. I am dedicated to bringing you new content to the blog and as soon as I can get some editing in I will bring some new content. Until then, every week on Cox 10 will be a new classic episode so if you are a new fan now is your opportunity to catch up on our inside jokes.

Smiley With a Knife ticket give away

This Saturday, New Orleans fastest rising instrumental rock bands, SMILEY WITH A KNIFE, will be playing possibly their biggest show to date at ONE EYED JACKS with MAN PLUS BUILDING and THE BLACK BELT (who is apparently the headliner so I take back what I said about this being SWAK's biggest show and replace it with The Balck Belt). The show will be $7 and apparently they will be givingg away free Pizza! But, if you email me at info@statictelevision.com and tell me what other instrumental band you like you are in on us! Check out the review we did for their debut album, How A Reign Comes To An End, by clicking HERE.

Here We Go Magic and Department of Eagles coming to Jacks

SXSW is not only an exciting time for the city of Austin, but it is also for us here in New Orleans due to all the bands touring in the area both before and after the massive music conference and this one is about as good as it comes. HERE WE GO MAGIC will be playing alongside one of my favorite bands of 2008, DEPARTMENT OF EAGLES, on March 22nd at ONE EYED JACKS. Click HERE to listen to Here We Go Magic's single Tunnelvision off their self title debut.

Silent Cinema ticket give away

It is funny how when you think about a band in New Orleans since 2001 you start to think of the word legend. Since Katrina, many bands have not made it past 2003 so it is amazing to see that New Orleans' legends SILENT CINEMA will be releasing their new album, Fins and Feathers, this month. Their CD release show will be this Friday, January 16th @ ONE EYED JACKS. They will be playing with FELIX (if anyone knows of a website for these guys I would love to know what it is) and HALF A MILLION STRANGERS. The show is only $10, but you can get a pair of tickets to the show simply by emailing me at info@statictelevision.com and telling me another New Orleans rock band that has been around since before 2003.

Get to know Jessica Lea Mayfield

I came across JESSICA LEA MAYFIELD through recommended albums on STEREOGUM and fell in love instantly. As much as I shouldn't be listening to love songs right now, I can not get enough of her new album, With Blasphemy So Heartfelt. She has a beautiful voice and lyrics that remind me of old country and can easily listen to the album from begening to end over and over again. I was also pleseantly surprised to see that she will be playing at the PARISH with the ANNUALS on February 10th. That should be a very entertaining show. Click HERE to listen to her song "For Today".

American Routes now on the web!

My favorite NPR show now has an online home! The site was built by New Orleans own The Canary Collective, folks behind Dirty Coast and Humid Beings and as far as I know this is the only NPR show that is based out of New Orleans. Click HERE to listen to past and present show. 10 years of the show is now archived and streaming!
