VIDEO: Generationals - "Angry Charlie"

This is the first official video from New Orleans own Park the Van recording artist, the Generationals. Directed by Lewis Fowler, this cute video has the boys playing all around New Orleans and you get a real feel for how fun they are. Be sure to also check out the interview we just did with them.

Odoms from outa space

For us who grew up in New Orleans, rap was everywhere you turned. From Q93 (before evil clear channel took over) and Phat Phat and All that (back when they played more then like 4 videos in an hour). Despite growing up in a weird vacuum of rap that created its own style in a similar fashion as New York did with just people rapping over DJs at block paries, many major hit makers came out of New Orleans in the 90s, from Master P, Mystikal, Juvenile and of course Lil Wayne. No matter how hard my parents tried, this music was a huge influence on me and many others in my generation.

Odoms, the long time famous hype man for Ballzack, is one of those people. Though, he might be a little older than me, and can actually pull original copies of Get It How You Live, Vol 1. He also has a copy of Baller Blockin on cassette which I am super jealous of, but I do have the original Master P doll, all have depreciated in value. But, I digress.

The first time I saw Odoms play "solo" was at a Ballzack show when he performed his then brand new track, Keeping Up With the Jeatsons. This alone got me super excited to see what he could do on his own. I would routinely ask him where his own album was, and he would say it wasn't ready. His perfectionism shines through in his debut album, Up And Atom.

This is an album for all those Ballzack and Lil Doogie fans out there, but this album is much deeper than that. With self production to tracks produced by Ballzack and Jay Younger, from White Zombie fame and did a majority of the production on Ballzack's last album, Yeah Indeed. All their time together has led to a really well produced album with many layers that will leave you smiling the whole way through. With it's huge single, Keeping Up With the Jetsons to his dance song, Dance Dance, there are a lot of great tracks that I think even non New Orleans would get into.

The song that I am posting here, Shybe, is my favorite song on the album. It reminds me a lot of some great old Hot Boys. Talking some game and telling a story with fabulous visual imagery. This is what all music should do, pull emotion from you and Odoms album pulls many emotions and keeps your head nodding the whole way through. Get the album, and see him and Ballzack live if you haven't yet. Just don't see them at Voodoo, they may get kicked off stage.

Get to know Bibio

I have a select few people that when they tell me about an artist I stop everything I am doing and listen to said artist. One of those people is Richard. He is a friend I met up here in New York, but he is originally from New Orleans. I should have met him through my rave days, but never did. Regardless, he has an amazing ear for music and shortly before I left town he sent me a link to Bibio's Myspace, and I was once again reassured why I listen to his taste in music.

Bibio reminds me why I still make the effort to listen to new music. It is truly original, and something that would be great while working or while trying to wind down at the bar. At age 12, Bibio tried his hand at rock and felt trapped. At age 16 he discovered electronic music and never looked back. Lucky for us. He blends ambiance with strong drum patterns that remind me a lot of the best of Boards of Canada mixed the Avalanches with a modern glitchyness that reminds me of Flying Lotus. I mean, with a combination of comparisons like that, how are are you still reading this post?

This British native is signed to the fabulous Warp Records and his Ambivalence Avenue record is well worth checking out. Here is the title track off that album.

Don Diablo remebers MJ

In case you have been living under that proverbial rock and this is the first thing you read when turn on you browser, Pop legend Michael Jackson has passed away. Don Diablo has done a tribute the only way he knows how, with a remix of one of his hits, Remember The Time. Sweet picture they sent, too. Enjoy.

Voodoo Announces Lineup

I know I am on vacation, but this is one of the days I am most excited about each year. This is when the one festival in New Orleans that actually brings in some innovative artists announces it's lineup.
All week they have been playing a word scramble game on their Twitter to make my head spin because I can't spell. Today they finally spilled the beans, and here are our initial picks.

JUSTICE:
I have an inside info that they will be playing LAST after Kiss on Halloween night. I know of a lot of people that have been waiting a while for them to come here, so they will be torn between the greatest free one day event in the city and a group that had it's prime a year ago. Also, the question of weather they are playing live or just DJing will be a huge factor as well.
GOGOL BORDELLO:
Their Gypsy style music I think will be a huge hit in New Orleans and the downtown, Quintron crowd. Also, a lot of fun live.
WEEN:
Come on, how can you not want to see these guys. And if you have seen them before, how could you not want to see them again. Definitely going to circle this one on our schedule.
THE BLACK KEY:
I have never found tese guys very good live. I have actually found them very boring, but they are a really talented band that if you haven't seen them you should and then tell me they aren't boaring because they know how to play a guitar and drums. I just would love to see them move around a little more.
THE COOL KIDS:
Another act that is about a year behind the year they should have been booked. Last year they came out of nowhere to change Hip Hop in a way that I don't think many people even know. I got to see them at SXSW two years ago. I wan't too impressed, but they were playing to a bunch of suits, so I will give them another chance.
Q TIP:
LEGEND. With him and Phife Dog they formed one of the best Hip Hop groups ever, A Tribe Called Quest. He will be getting people moving for sure.
FISCHERSPOONER:
I saw him back in college at the House of Blues. One of the most entertaining shows I have ever seen. This flamboyant man puts on an amazing show, though his music has disappointed me for quite a while, I will see him to see what he does on stage this time.
The Flaming Lips:
Come on, you know you wana.

Other people you should have highlighted on your schedule are: Generationals, The Black Lips, Quintron and Miss Pussycat, Mates of States, MyNameIsJohnMichael, New Orleans Bingo! Show, The Knux, Rotary Downs, and Katy Red, Big Freddia, and Sissy Nobby

People we don't care about: Eminem, Kiss, Widespread, D12, Brand New, and All Time Low

Did I miss anyone? Who are you excited about and why? Who do you wish was on this list? Yeah Yeah Yeahs? Animal Collective? Grizzly Bear? I could go for a while on the ones I wish were on there.

Gone Surfing

Hello faithful readers and passer bys. I am heading off to Hawaii to see one of the most inspirational personal figures in my life, my Grandmother. I haven't seen her in over 3 years and at 92, you never know when the next time you will get to see someone. Also, I have not taken a legitimate vacation in just about as long so I am doing that and will not be posting anything to this blog, or editing any new material for the show till next week when I get back to New York. I hope you miss me as much as I will miss you. I will leave you with a free MP3 from All Smiles. This is Jim Fairchild's (from Grandaddy and Modest Mouse) latest work, Oh, For The Getting There And Not Letting Go. Enjoy, and I have lots of stuff planned for when I get back, just need to recharge the human bataries, you dig?

A Random Question to Blue Party

I am not sure if as I get older I am getting weirder, or more interesting. I hope it is the later.

I have decided to start asking random questions to bands. That will be my thing to keep me, and hopefully you interested. The lucky first contestant is The Blue Party, from my home town of New Orleans.

I had a great conversation recently with a friend of mine. We spoke of a time when we would no longer have fancy things like Twitter and Cell Phones and lawn mowers. I then proposed the question of what actual practical survival skills do we have if the switch went out today, and we were back in a pre-industrial state. Later that night, after a few drinks, I received an email from Blue Party about a tour documentary they were working on (I would highly recommend not clicking on this link unless you are OK with the F word). I then decided to respond, probably in not the best state of mind, but I may have started a neat little thing here.

I told them I would mention the documentary in exchange for their answer to my question about survival in a doomsday scenario, much like The Road. Here is what Reid from the band sent back.

"Alex Bachari was a Bear scout, so he knows how to kill mountain lions with his bare hands if necessary (feel free to ask him about it - akbachar@loyno.edu). He also has a survival handbook, a Volkswagen emergency kit, and book on communicating with bears. Thus, two of our main predators are neutralized by Alex's knowledge of talking to bears and killing mountain lions."

Sounding good; I may be looking for you guys then. What else you got?

"I will have stolen a portable DVD player in the mayhem of the world ending, and several packs of batteries. This will be used for watching all the episodes of Man vs. Wild and Survivorman to figure out what to do in each climate."

I would also recommend watching Grizzly Man for Alex's sake. I doubt we will have time for such things and batteries may want to be used for things like flashlights and the such.

"Al would grow a bear (this is what they typed. I feel like they meant beard, but growing a bear does sound more interesting) and fashion a double-edged battle axe to fight off any non-bear/mountain lion predators. He also would become best friends with a volleyball because he hates the rest of us."

My problem with this one is I have a feeling there will be more guns than axes to deal with. Good Castaway reference though. I am hoping the rest of you aren't as crazy as Al here.

"Hannah would be tolerant of all her band mates except Al, since he has chosen a volleyball over the rest of the band. While Al is playing with his volleyball, Hannah would try to kill him because he has the meatiest body."

Now I know I am not going to try and find you in the end times!

"George would accept the fact that the world is ending and "open his third-eye and embrace the abyss". (Apparently this is taken from Kabbalah, a heretical sect of Pre-Christian Judaism that places a heavy emphasis on mysticism and the apocalypse... George is our bouzouki player. He's kind of weird.)"

How many people are in this band? I have my doubts there will be much time to switch religions at this point. I will be sticking to the faith that has gotten me this far.

"Ross would finally change his name to Boss and negotiate on our behalf when we meet other renegade bands in the wilderness. You don't want to get into a negotiation with Boss - he can stare anybody down."

Well, I wish the best of luck to you guys. I have a feeling you guys may want to just listen to Alex if God forbid we have to see such days.

I also want to let you know what the deal is with the bunny, in case anyone else was as curious as me. Their guitar player, Alex, bought the bunny suit a few months ago and it travels wherever they go. They usually find a drunk fan to wear it at gigs (The picture above is one of Andrew Hartsock from Big Rock Candy Mountain wearing it). The Blue Party claims "The democrats have a donkey, republicans an elephant, The Blue Party has a bunny. " Well good to know. Here are some MP3s for you too:

Thursday Night Fake Blood in Williamsburg!!!

Wish I would have found out about this sooner, but oh well it's right around the corner from my house!! But, one of my favorite producers out there is gonna be rocking the hood.

FAKE BLOOD!!!

If you're around and miss this something is wrong with you...seriously. The man has only began showing his real face over the past few months, for the longest time to most of the world he was nothing more than a mystery, churning out some of the hottest tunes on the dancefloor. You should all know by now that Fake Blood is one of the monikers used by Theo Keating (a.k.a. Touche, The Black Ghosts, and the Wiseguys). He's a friggin underground legend in the making.

Over the past few years he's been anonymously ripping up everyone's tunes, from Armand Van Helden, to Little Boots, to Hot Chip, to The Kills, and most recently Mike Snow - he's been on the warpath.

I saw him last Dj with his partner in The Black Ghosts - Simon Lord - and they killed it. If his last essential mix a couple of months ago is any indication Thurs. night will be bangin!

It never hurts when the night is supported from the Palms Out Crew and Roxy Cottontail either ;) So see u guys and gals there.

Cheers

VIDEO: Sonic Youth - "Sacred Trickster"

This is the first video from Sonic Youth's new album The Eternal, out now on Matador Records. I get what they are saying in the video, but I never like anything that even hints at violence toward other people. The cute girls definitely distract me.

Frankmusik

Sorry that it's been a couple of weeks, I've been super busy getting ready for my brother's wedding which happened this past weekend in Las Vegas. Was a super experience for the whole family.

But, I digress. I'd like to sit and share some music from one of my favorite underground pop artists out there. And yes, your eyes do not deceive, I said POP music. It's a genre that I generally try to stay away from, but good music is good music.

If you haven't already heard of Frankmusik over the past year or so, you definitely will over the next. His full length debut album "Complete Me" is supposed to be dropping next month in July, and if the blog buzz over the past few months will be of any indication of success he should do very well for himself.

Last year he was on the road opening for Sam Sparro, and is apparently on the docket to play with The Pet Shop Boys at their concerts in Manchester and London this year.

He's definitely of the calibre to grace the stage with the acts that he's playing with, that's no question. I only hope that his soon to be fame doesn't dilute the quality of work that he's been putting out with his singles. Many of which have proven to be treasure troves for the remix crowd, which of course is how I found him...haha

I'm actually going to share a few of my favorites:

Slow paced melodic guitar and synth goodness that makes you want to get lost with an ocean view in an 80's movie.

Without question one of the best covers I've ever heard of the Police. Simply amazing vocal styling which give a classic a whole new groove.

This is the one that did it for me, huge bass drops and sharp percussion bring out the best of a catchy infectious vocal.

And nothing against the other three but I'm saving my favorite for last. Math Head from over at Brooklyn's own Trouble & Bass crew just destroy's this one. Math Head's signature Heavy Bass/Darkwave style contrasting the airy vocals make this a peak time monster meant for the dance floor. It's an underrated gem!!

Northside Fest Highlights day 4

The last day is always somewhat exciting for an event like Northside Fest. You know that there are usually some great bands coming, so you have to pull together what little energy you have to go see them. My day started with another awesome brunch at Moto (I ate very well this weekend). I then headed over to see Air Waves.

This was the biggest surprise of the weekend. Maybe it had a lot to do with all the let downs I had the day before with bands, but I really liked this band. Their lyrics were very sincere, and it was music I could move to. I would definitely see them again if I had the chance. I was disappointed that their only merch they had was giving away cassets. I know it's the cool thing to do these days, but damn it I don't own a cassete player anymore; Katrina ate it! Click HERE to see some footage I shot from the performance. I then darted over to Studio B to see one of my favorite bands of last year, the Dodos.

I am a big fan of these guys, but damn it Studio B, you know how to kill a good time at a day party. It was too dark (so much so that I kept running into people) and hot so I only made it through a couple of songs before heading out to go shopping. Click HERE though to hear the fabulous song Jodi, and watch a bunch of people walk in front of me. I then had a few hours to blow before our man Bill Callahan at the Music Hall of WIlliamsburg.

Not too much more great things I can say about this man. He is a true genius. If you have an opportunity to see him live, do. You will see what a passionate person looks like when he steps on stage. And now for a shout out to the Douch Bag who said I was hovering over him just because I was standing next to his drunk ass while he was sitting down on the balcony. Thanks for making my night that much worse and I hope you threw up all over your drunk ass and all your friends who didn't try and put some common sense into you. All of you are horrible human beings.

Overall I enjoyed the Northside Fest. I got to see a lot of bands I love, and some bands that I have never heard before. That is what makes things like this so great. My complaints are that a majority of the acts ran late which make it very difficult to plan when to leave one venue to another and it makes it confusing as to who is on at a given moment. Things like this should be fixed with experience and understanding that even the hole in the wall venues need to have good stage managers to handle up. Just go to SXSW and see how they do one year. I would definitely go back again.

Be sure to check out our YouTube Channel to see a bunch of the live performances I shot over the weekend.

Northside Fest Highlights day 3

Nothing like seeing rock bands at 2 in the morning. I started my day yesterday with a wonderful brunch at Egg than I ran over to the Music Hal of Williamsburg to catch the Extraordinaires.

These guys are as fun as they look in this image. I knew of them because they are good friends with the Peekers and they always raved about them, but I never had an opportunity until this weekend to see them. They put on a really good live show. Bands in general need to understand that in the end you are an entertainer and your goal is to keep me as a viewer interested and good music alone wont keep me from not talking during your set and wondering if I can still make it home in time to see the Yankees/Mets series. Unfortunatly, I only caught 3 songs of theirs before they were finished, but I defenitly will look into seeing them again the next time they come around.
Me and my friends then stayed for the real reason I came that day, O' Death.

This was another band I had heard so much about their live shows. I first heard these guys on Subterranean about a year ago now and I loved their sound then. It is really special and draws on sounds and old musical traditions that I feel like a lot of musicians over look for inspiration. They also put on a great live show, and their drummer is hard not to watch with his use of chains and a tamborene taped to his shoe. I can't wait to show you the footage from their show. Keep locked to our Twitter for more info. After this I ran over to Spike Hill for the L Magazine party. I got there shortly after Pow Wow! had left the stage which is unfortunate, because I hear they killed it. I was stuck with an 8 bit instrumental band that I did not like. I then scooted over to Public Assembly to see Motel Motel.

I am not too sure what to think about these guys. I think I understand what they are trying to do but didn't feel the execution was there. The singer had a voice somewhere between the singer from Delta Spirit and Cold War Kids, but the production wasn't close to that vein of music. After this we wint back to Spike Hill to see Savoir Adore.

First off I don't know how to pronounce their name. If I pronounce Svoir the way I feel I should then I feel I should be saying the word Adore in a more Italian way or something. But, everyone I heard say adore said it in an American way. Regardless, I wasn't too into them either. Not too sure if it was the space or them. I am going to have to give them and Motel Motel another listen.

Head to our YouTube Channel to watch some performances from this weekend. Now I am off to see the Air Waves and the Dodos than I get to geek out tonight on Bill Callahan, my man crush.

Northside Fest Highlights day 2

This is my first report of the Northside Fest because the first day I ended going to work (I know, lame) My day started drinking with friends at Fette Sau (amazing BBQ here in Brooklyn if you haven't tried it already). Then went off to get some free Hiniken and check out Sunset Rubdown at Studio B.

In case you aren't familiar with these guys, they started as a solo project for Spencer Krug of Wolf Parade. The first 4 songs were really good until they started to have a weird technical difficulty that I couldn't hear from where I was standing. Spencer was great and I was really happy I got to check them out. I was then told to go check out a band at Public Assembly called Murder Mystery.

They were adorable as you can tell by this picture. Very melodic pop music. The lead singer looked like my friend Parker who used to be in World Leader Pretend and he also sounds like he should be in a Zydaco band. Also, the drummer is super cute. Hopefully will hear more from these guys soon.
After some much needed pizza (been drinking for a while on just a little BBQ) we headed over to Bruar Falls on Grand street to check out Drink Up Buttercup.

I don't know what it is about this street, but the places always have a weird vibe. They were super lively and fun though. I had heard a lot about them and I can see why for sure.

I am currently uploading a video from each of these bands from last night hopefully they come out alright. The Sunset Rubdown one is decent and going up now.

Golden Boots Day

Today was suppose to be Generationals Day, but I totally slacked off and didn't finish the interview I did with them at Brooklynola. I ran into the common problem I face of trying out a new editing technique that can either be mind blowing or just straight up blow, so I decided to sit on it for a few days. Hey, Ted from the Generationals did tell me to try and make him look cool, so I may keep the crazy edits.

Anyway, back to the issue at hand. I thought it would be fun today to do a band off Park the Van that I love that I feel like very few people in New Orleans or New York even know about. Golden Boots out of Arazona are a great band whose songs bring so much visual elements to the table. The first time I heard their first album, Burning Brain, I was sold. This is such a fantastic album that will take you on a journey. Check them out so I can say I told you so!

Floating Action day

Ohh lord, half way through Park the Van Week. I am already a little upset. On the bright side, today is Floating Action day! The crazy thing about Floating Action is I can't remember the first time I ever heard them, but I do remember the first time I ever saw them. That was at the first Park the Van Holiday Soiree two Decembers ago. That was one of the most surreal evenings we have ever presented with passed out producers, a rare rain storm in December and 2 car accidents that put some people in the Hospital. On the bright side, I got to see the reason Chris fell in love with these North Carolinian natives. Here is the interview we did with them at the last Holiday Soiree.

Seth definitely has a quite confidence in what he is doing musically. Here is a music video I created for them before the show at the point in my first love and home, Lakeview.

THe High Strung Day

Day two of Park the Van Week and I am still just as excited as when I thought it up on Sunday. Today we look at a band that defines being on the road, The High Strung. This Detroit threesome is a joy to watch and their lead singer fits a name for a band about as well as it comes.

I recently had the honer of seeing a little bit of a documentary on them and their National Rock and Roll Library Tour. This is something that I think makes them so different than most touring bands where in 2007 and 08 they toured libraries and I believe they will be doing it again. It must be so surreal to see such a lively band in a place that is known for silence.

Here is the interview we did with them 2 SXSWs ago

I was so wrapped up in Park the Van week madness that I almost forgot to upload the new show! Well here it is with some great interviews of Leslie and the Ly's and the Dead Kenny G's by Jeremy from the Good Guys and a lot of killer videos! Hit play, let it load than enjoy, and if you can watch it tonight on Cox 10 it should be on at 10 tonight.

Peeker Day

Yesterday while enjoying a beautiful day up here in New York, I got a chill of excitement over the Park the Van Showcase this Friday in New Orleans. It has inspired me so much that I have dubbed this week Park the Van week. So we will reintroduce you to the bands that will be playing this Friday and hopefully you will learn some new things as well.

Today is The Peeker Day. I first met the Peekers back at SXSW 2007 when only Chris with Park the Van had heard of them through obsessed fan emails of obsessed Dr. Dog and the Teeth. Than one day Shy from the Capitol Years told him that he should check them out. So he helped set them up at a show at Genes Po Boys. This is where I come in. I wanted to do a piece on Louisiana Bands at SXSW and Chris told me to check them out and from the second I first rand into them I fell in love and decided to cancel all other interviews and follow them around. Here is what I made. Sorry about the bad audio. I made this at a time when Cox 10 wasn't providing me with the right equipment to do what I needed to do. I have since purchased it all. Enjoy this classic!

Boy have I gotten better as an editor. I can't seem to find part 2. The end of the story is they get asked to play the Park the Van showcase, and get signed to the label shortly after that. Not convinced yet? Well here is an MP3.

Jeff Hanson Dies At 31

Our Associate Producer Bonnie sent me this sad news. This is pretty sad news for us here at Static. We interviewed Jeff Hanson two South Bys ago at the Kill Rock Stars showcase at Emos. This is the first artist that we have interviewed that has passed away. He definitely passed before he reached his full potential. He was one of the nicest, most sincere artists we ever interviewed and the music world has lost a very special person this week. Here is the article from NPR where we got the news and here is the interview we did with him.

VIDEO: MGMT - Kids

This is the latest video from MGMT off their over played debut CD. I wouldn't normally do this since this song is so damn old, but this video was shot in New Orleans. I am still trying to figure out why it was. You can see they shot in front of Whole Foods on Magazine Street. This could have easily been done anywhere in the world. Any one know the answer to this question? Also, Joanna Newsom does a horible job of acting as the mother in the video.

Mr. Scruff at Brooklyn Yard

So, summer is sorta here. I know it really is here in New Orleans, but it is still dreary for the most part here in New York, but there is one sign that summer is here and that is Sunday Best at Brooklyn Yard. A weekly electronic music day party where some of the best around come and play to a bunch of hungry music lovers eating tacos and sipping on sangria. I have been twice now and have always had a great time. One of my favorite DJs in the world, Mr. Scruff, played this past Sunday. Here is the beginning of his set!

Eat your heart out Soul Sister! Now here is some of the music I geek out to. As you can see, my little flip camera is super shaky because I was dancing pretty hard at this point

Static 313 preview

Cox 10 hasn't told me weather or not they have successfully downloaded the new show, but I am acting like it will air tonight so here is our preview. Like I said the other day, Jeremy from the Good Guys hooked me up with two fabulous interviews with Leslie and the Ly's and the Dead Kenny Gs. Enjoy, and if you are in New Orleans tune in to Cox 10 at 10 tonight to see the whole episode. It's another good one with a lot of brand new videos.
