Fist Impressions: LCD Soundsystem - This is Happening

James Murphey, who just recently told Sasha Frere-Jones of the New Yorker it all came about as a joke, has laughed his way to his third LCD Soundsystem album. LCD Soundsystem is known as a "hipster-indie" band that creates intelligent dance music and amazing rock music. Nothing has changed on their third full length.

This Is Happening, is a follow up to their highly acclaimed album Sound of Silver that featured one of the greatest songs of the last decade, All My Friends (number 2 on Pitchforks list). Their latest work doesn't fall short of the expectations that have been set on themselves as a band. The album starts out with a great song, Dance Yrself Clean, which builds to a point that you can't help but start dancing. Be warned that if you turn this song up before the break it may hurt your ear drums. It is a great way to get the dancing out of the way because the album takes you on a musical journey that most artists I don't think are capable of these days.

This Is Happening was recorded in one of Rick Rubin's house studios in LA far away from James' DFA studio in the West Village. This doesn't seem to take away from their typical themes of coming to age and grips with becoming an aging musician in a field that is dominated by kids just finishing High School and not ready for what it actually takes to be a working musician. Some tracks take an awesome turn then normal. All I Want and Somebody's Calling Me is more of a late 70s, early 80s vibe, reminiscent of a Bowie sound.

James' singing technique luckily hasn't changed either. He continues to speak over their amazingly produced tracks. I love how he speaks almost off rhythm, like a drunken sailor. It speaks to me as a New Orleanean. If you are a fan of any of his previous work or a fan of modern music in general, you need to get on this. This is a solid album from top to bottom.

The two tracks I have bellow are great representations of the album. The first single off the album, Drunk Girls, is a rowdy song that fits the lyrics and is probably more rock then people expect from them (if you haven't seen Spike Jonez's video for it yet you need to). The second track is my favorite song off the album. You Wanted a Hit has a wonderful build and speaks from what appears to be James' heart; talking on the frustrations of trying to make a song for his fans.

And that is the beauty of LCD Soundsystem in general. They make music for themselves and say, "if you like it, buy it; if not, fuck off." And I mean, that is about as American Rock and Roll as it comes.

Fist Impressions: The National - High Violet

The National, originally from Ohio (come to New York LeBron!) and now currently Brooklyn residents, released their fifth full length album, High Violet, this week. This is also their first album on 4AD. They have been on a roll coming into this album. Both of their previous records, Alligator and Boxer, were both critically acclaimed and have led them to a good place as musicians. Their latest album follows along the same path of wonderful melodic vocals backed by production that works beautifully with Matt Berninger's baritone voice.

As with the previous albums, the National's strength is Matt's voice and lyrics, talking about love and search for self. This album to me doesn't grab me initially as the previous ones did, but as a big fan of theirs it is something that will keep my ears dancing for some time.

Caddywhompus releases Remainder

Our friends in Caddywhompus this week release their album Remainder on the New Orleans record label, Community Records. You can download the whole album for free, but I would recommend supporting these guys and buying it! Also, if you are in the Houston area this Friday, they will be playing an album release party at IndieHouston House, 1816 Calumet. They will be playing with their 7" partners, Sings, as well as a bunch of other bands. Head to the Facebook event page for more information.

VIDEO: Blair Interview

Been a while I know, but we got some stuff in the pipeline, I promise. Here is an interview with New Orleans own darling, singer-songwriter Blair Gimma. The episode this interview is on is playing now on Cox 4 in New Orleans and I will have it online tomorrow. Enjoy!

Static cooks Jambalaya and Red Beans for some hungry Brooklynites

Wanted to give a shout out to a blog that loved my Red Beans and Rice and Jambalaya that we made for our other producer's going away party. We got to the bon voyage celebration and there was this whole MayDay Danger Party put on by this blog called Me So Hungry at one of my favorite neighborhood haunts here in Bushwick, the Lock In. They had some neat bands that I don't recall them saying who they were and some kind words about our food. Reguardless, I hope that we can cook some more dishes with them in the future. HOLLAR BACK!

First Impressions: Broken Social Scene - Forgiveness Rock Record

Broken Social Scene's newest album, Forgiveness Rock Record, is out today on the Canadian label Arts and Crafts. The band that is driven by front men Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning hasn't put out a record "together" since their amazing self titled record in 2005.

Their latest album doesn't venture far from what made them one of the best bands of the last ten years. The record starts off super strong with the single World Sick, which was released a few months back. The album continues down a steady pop-rocking path that will have most listeners very pleased. I think the only people that won't enjoy this record are people who can't get their head out their ass.

The group that has spawned so many great solo artists including Fiest and Jason Collett just knows how to make amazing pop music. Their use of production and vocals are melded perfectly. They use vocals as another instrument to tool their music. I would highly recommend getting this record, because you will probably have it on repeat for a while.
